Projects are articles that describe interesting DIY projects or hacks that are of interest to the community. They may be simple pointers to external resources with an explanation about why it's particularly interesting or it could be a full-blown internally-produced build document.

The Franklin University Project

Back in 2008, I was attending Franklin University finishing up my Information Technology degree. The final requirement was to complete an interdisciplinary I.T. project as a team, ideally for the benefit of a non-profit. Typically I.T. capstone projects involved web and database because they require no external resources. However, since my job afforded me access to equipment, our team focused on a networking-centric project for the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Phantom Loads: Are all wall-warts the same?

The gadget that started this all off...

A friend passed along this URL to a group of us, mentioning that it'd be cool to have one of these: http://www.bikerumor.com/2011/11/08/review-fastmac-u-socket-usb-wall-outlet/#more-36894. A discussion was borne covering issues of safety, use, and if it really saved money. My instincts were that it would be safe, but wouldn't save you much money.

Deep-Cycle Battery Monitoring Experiment

Motivation

A couple of years ago, I purchased a 12V deep-cycle battery to use in emergencies. I have a little inverter that I could hook up to it and maybe use it to power and appliance or something during the intermittent power outages we have here in the city.

From Hackaday: A Simple Method for Expanding Arduino IO Capacity

This is an example project entry that directs the reader off-site.

Personally I'm a fan of the arduino platform. I do realize that it's a crutch and real-men us PIC or whatever. I've done simple things with PICAXE, but the turn-around time and approachability of the arduino is unmatched. Some may consider it a toy, but it's a fun toy, and with it I can quickly turn out a physical computing project.

Here is a simple technique using I2C to link two arduinos.
