SDR CTF: 6M Amateur Band
Requirements:Single Dongle. Basic audio client, windows or Linux.
Capability:Reception of VHF 6-M Ham Band, regional distances, longer when conditions permit.
Tune down to the advertised limit of some of the RTL-SDR dongles to the 6-Meter band, 50 to 54 MHz.
I'm using a simple discone antenna which is good of wideband reception but not always ideal for pulling in some signals. When I tune down to 50 MHz I get a disappointing waterfall like this:

At this point I turn to a low-noise amplifier to help out. I'm using an LNA4ALL that I'm powering from a simple 9V alkaline battery. As you can see, there's definitely some effect as I apply power to the amplifier in the middle of this plot.

The signals are still too weak for me to pull in with my current set up. The next step would be to attempt a simple 6M dipole to improve reception.
Around 50 MHz you can see what are supposed to be Beacons. Since the 6-meter band is so susceptible to atmospheric conditions it's generally quiet except for late Summer when the band "opens up." When that happens you should see a lot of traffic on the calling-frequency 50.125 MHz by setting your software to Upper Side Band (USB)
Here you can see there is something going on with the calling-frequency, but I'm not able to copy it.
